Keeping Your Humidifier Clean

In the process of evaporating water, minerals are left behind and will accumulate over time. Minerals are present to some degree in all treated water sources. These include calcium which forms a hard ‘scale’, or other elements such as iron which contribute to staining. For that reason, all humidifiers require periodic cleaning to ensure safe and proper operation.

Depending on the evaporative technology used in the humidifier, the maintenance procedures can differ between models. Refer to the care and maintenance procedures specifically developed for your unit as described in the product’s Manual.

However, there are several operating considerations that apply to all humidifiers;

• Only use a properly treated and chlorinated drinking water source.
• Adjust the humidistat control in accordance to the outside temperature.
• Shut off humidifier during prolonged periods of inactivity such as an extended mild weather spell, or while away on vacation. Turn the humidistat to the OFF position, turn water supply OFF and drain all water from the unit if equipped with water reservoir. The by-pass air can be left open to allow the air to dry the humidifier. This way the humidifier can easily be reactivated by turning the water supply back on.
• In areas with hard water, consider adding a disposable in-line water filter to reduce mineral accumulations in the humidifier. Replace filter as required.
• Replace disposable evaporative pads when dirty or clogged.
• Plastic surfaces are easily cleaned using standard household cleaners in a well ventilated area. Hard scale accumulation is removed by soaking the affected area with an acidic cleaner such as household vinegar, or commonly available specifically formulated liquid descaling products. Caution: Never mix different household cleaners containing ammonia, chlorine with descaling solutions containing acids, as these will cause a dangerous chemical reaction producing potentially lethal fumes. After cleaning, rinse the surfaces thoroughly with fresh water to prevent dispersal of residual chemicals in the duct system during subsequent use.
