Periodic Cleaning
Congratulations! You've purchased a Desert Spring Humidifier, the most effective furnace/central air humidifier on the market. To minimize air quality issues and minerals that remain after the evaporation of water, we recommend the following humidifier cleaning schedule.
Desert Spring Humidifiers equipped with Auto-Flush™3, the
humidifier self-cleaning system, require only seasonal end cleaning and we
recommend our Enviro-Clean Descaler Solution.
Systems without Auto-Flush™3 require regular cleaning to manage minerals and ensure optimum air quality.
From a mineral management perspective the amount of cleaning depends on the mineral content of the evaporated water and how much humidity is required. Minerals would only need to be removed every month or two in most regions of North America.
Cleaning Procedures
To ensure the Desert Spring Humidifier system continues to perform at peak efficiency, follow these easy steps:
- Turn the water source off at the saddle valve
- Drain the humidifier basin
- Without AUTO-FLUSH™3 system. Drain the water from the basin into a bucket using the built-in bottom drain
- With AUTO-FLUSH™3 system. Activate the Desert Spring Auto-Flush™3 timer. (See Auto-Flush™3 timer installation instructions for activation procedures)
- Lift and remove plastic lid
- Lift and remove wheel assembly out of the unit
- With a sponge, remove any mineral build-up from the basin. Where minerals have hardened try adding a solution of white vinegar and water (1 cup vinegar + 1 cup water) to the bottom basin. Wait for an hour. This will quickly dissolve most types of mineral build-up. Drain the cleaning solution and wipe with a sponge. The wheel assembly may also be put into a vinegar water solution to loosen minerals that have built up on evaporative surfaces. The minerals can then be brushed and rinsed off. Wipe all surfaces and allow to air dry. (Drying the system assists in killing any potential molds)
- For extreme mineral build up you will require a more aggressive cleaning
solution. We recommend our specially formulated ENVIRO-CLEAN DESCALER Solution.
- Re-install the wheel, replace cover, close the drain, turn on the water, (in the case of Auto-Flush™3, go through the reactivation procedure), and your system is ready to operate
Season End Maintenance
At the end of the humidification season conduct a regular cleaning as
per the Periodic Cleaning Procedures.. Be thorough, and we recommend using
our specially formulated Enviro Clean Solution or a vinegar and water solution.
Turn off the water supply and disconnect the power to the humidifier by turning
off the humidistat. If using Auto-Flush™3, simply unplug from the wall. If
you have a central air conditioning system, close the hot air supply damper.
Your Desert Spring Humidifier is now ready to be reactivated for the next
humidification season.
Technical Tips
For additional humidity run your furnace continually. This creates a year round circulation of air while adding essential humidity. Many central air humidifiers work only when there is a call for heat but the Desert Spring Humidifier continues to humidify even when passing ambient air through the system. Lab tests indicate this translates into approximately 7 gallons per day converted to humidity.
In hot, arid regions, humidity is required during the
dry summer months. In dry climates, air conditioners pull valuable moisture
from the air intensifying the need for increased humidity. The Desert
Spring Humidifier System restores valuable moisture by using ambient
air from within the home. Circulating and drawing in fresh air plays
an important role in air quality and ultimately promotes better health.
Circulating air tends to keep temperatures more constant and lowers
the risk of molds taking hold, as fewer pockets of stagnant moist air/reduced
condensation are available.
